Chaos & Amazement #2318: Geoffrey Hinton, Ed Sheeran, The Paperclipalypse , and AI Generated Beer
Welcome to my new subscribers! This edition covers topics such as the warnings of AI's potential danger from Geoffrey Hinton, the EU's Digital Markets Act, AI-generated music, and the usual weirdness.
AI Rules and Regulations
Geoffrey Hinton, a renowned computer scientist and cognitive psychologist, has significantly influenced the field of artificial intelligence with his pioneering research in deep learning, which has revolutionized computer vision, natural language processing, and speech recognition.
‘The Godfather of A.I.’ Leaves Google and Warns of Danger Ahead
For half a century, Geoffrey Hinton nurtured the technology at the heart of chatbots like ChatGPT.
I am not an AI alarmist, but when Geoffrey Hinton starts to sound like Victor Frankenstein it’s time to worry.
In a tweet, Geoffrey Hinton rectifies things a bit: In the NYT today, Cade Metz implies that I left Google so that I could criticize Google. Actually, I left so that I could talk about the dangers of AI without considering how this impacts Google. Google has acted very responsibly.
Another quote: “These things are totally different from us,” he says. “Sometimes I think it’s as if aliens had landed and people haven’t realized because they speak very good English.”
Just downloaded the AI video call app “Call Annie” and it blew my mind.
Hey there! I'm Annie, your new best AI friend and (kind of) super intelligent assistant.

The EU's Digital Markets Act becomes applicable this week, after entering into force in November 2022; enforcement on gatekeepers is not expected until spring 2024 https://tcrn.ch/412pH5s
These DMA rules make sure digital markets are fair by setting conditions for gatekeepers, like not using other companies' data without permission, not forcing users to use certain apps or settings, and not tracking users without their permission for targeted ads.
EU lawmakers have also passed a draft of the Artificial Intelligence (AI) Act, which will be the first comprehensive set of laws related to AI regulation. EU proposes new copyright rules for generative AI
The DMA and AIA are two separate regulations that aim to regulate different aspects of digital markets and AI respectively. They are not directly related to each other.
Ed Sheeran vs Marvin Gaye and Drake vs AI
A federal jury found that Ed Sheeran did not copy Marvin Gaye’s 1973 classic “Let’s Get It On” for his 2014 hit “Thinking Out Loud.”
Speaking outside the Manhattan court, Sheeran said: “'I'm just a guy with a guitar who loves writing music for people to enjoy. I am not and will not allow myself to be a piggy bank.”
If Sheeran were convicted, this case would have created a dangerous precedent.

Meanwhile, AI music will manifest into something new, and it is the unexpected and rapid force of AI that is the real threat to the music industry. You can listen to the latest trending AI music from here: AI Hits - AI Music Top Charts
Check out these AI-generated versions of Paul McCartney's "New" and John Lennon's "Grow Old With Me" that reimagine the solo material as Beatles songs, adding new vocal harmonies and instrumentals reminiscent of classic Beatles tracks.

From Your Brain to My AI
Semantic decoders are AI systems that can translate people's brain activity into streams of text. They can be used to benefit patients who have lost their ability to physically communicate.

Weird and Wonderful
This surreal AI generated beer ad features simulated people partying to Smash Mouth's "All Star" at a stereotypical American BBQ, merging with beer vessels, flaming grills, and beer glasses turning into cans. And then it gets weird… https://privateisland.tv/project#synthetic-summer
